Camping! Who doesn’t love camping? Unfortunately many people have their reservations when it comes to camping. I have a friend who detests it because she is scared of insects and crawling creatures. Well, that is understandable. However, it is good to face your fears head on. I think camping is one of life’s greatest pleasures. The fondest moments and memories while traveling are those spent in a camp site. I still remember my adventures as a scout in primary school, the experiences during my time in the President’s Award Scheme in University and every other little chance I got to join camping getaways during my first job. The best part about camping is that it’s a free space. There are no curtailments and nobody cares. You can scream all you want, eat all you want, drink whatever you love, play any game you want which is available, think and reflect all you want, meet strangers who later becomes friends, and unleash that character you hide in a formal setting. It’s not important where you do it or how you enjoy it, what matters is that you hit the road; breath the fresh air, stargaze, listen to birds’ sweet melodies and the wind blowing, experience the camp fire and love every second of it. If you go camping in a group, you can tell stories and play games around the bonfire. Group camping brings together different personalities. There are storytellers, rib crackers, introverts, people who can’t control their liquid intake and wife materials who will always be in the kitchen. When camping, being out in the open allows you to see and appreciate the Milky Way. You get to discover foods that taste better when cooked and eaten outside, and on top of camping being cheaper, the benefits are numerous compared to spending the night in a hotel room. I know you’re probably wondering where to find these campsites and if there is any that is close to Nairobi. I’m here to tell you that yes there is! Recently, I discovered Camp Nakawa in Undiri, Kikuyu, Kiambu County. This hideout is only 29km and a 50 minutes’ drive from Nairobi CBD. It is easily accessible by public means although private transport is rather efficient. Camp Nakawa is tucked away within kikuyu, in the middle of homesteads. It is set up on a large chunk of land that creates enough space for visitors. Getting there If you are using public means, take a matatu to Kikuyu Town. From here take a boda boda or a taxi and ask them to drop you at Camp Nakawa. If using private means, drive to Kikuyu Town and locate the railway. After crossing the railway, make a right turn onto Kikuyu-Undiri Road then take the second left turn onto Kamangu- Ng’amba Kikuyu Road. A short distance past ACK Church, make a right turn and you will spot the camp from there. Camping You don’t own a tent or sleeping bag? Worry not. Camp Nakawa got that covered. There are tents for capacities of one, two, five and eight people. The field is large enough to accommodate a significant number of tents. The cost of camping is KSh. 1500 for residents and KSh. 2500 for non-residents. Renting a mattress will cost you KShs. 300 per night, while a sleeping bag comes at an extra Ksh. 300 per night. If you have your own tent, the charges are KShs. 1000 for residents and KSh. 2000 for non-residents. A hot shower, a fire pit and a kitchenette are all available and at your disposal. Meals Camp Nakawa has a fully equipped kitchenette with sufficient water supply. It is spacious and conducive for preparing your own meals. There is an outdoor grill for a nyama choma delicacy. If you prefer not to cook, Camp Nakawa can prepare meals on your behalf. You will need to organize with the camp and agree on the menu. They also organize birthday parties, office parties, end of year parties and team building activities. Bonfire The fire pit is between the kitchen and the bar. How convenient? Firewood costs KSh. 350 per bundle and this is enough to last until late in the night. There are enough chairs and sitting spaces at the bonfire. If it rains, the bonfire can be moved to a pit with a roof. Next to the fire pit, there is a concrete slab from which food and drinks can be served. Bar The camp has a bar area with a counter, a sitting area and a dance floor. It operates on a BYOD (Bring your own drink) basis. There is a music system for those willing to shake what their mama gave them. A DJ is made available at a cost and on request. Team Building Camp Nakawa can set up tents and seats for meetings. They have packages for team building that include or exclude meals. You can have it as an overnight or day event, with or without a facilitator or even opt to hire the grounds only. The area is large enough to accommodate more than 300 people. Security The camp has overnight security guards. They walk around the camp to make sure the area is safe. There is an electric fence on one side of the camp. The location of the camp keeps you at ease by virtue of the fact that there are people around. Contacts You can reach the camp through the below details: Mobile: +254(726)209214, +254(738)819505 Address: P.O. It provides quality time with the people in your life that are most meaningful. If you want to really get to know your spouse, family members and best friends, take them camping.
